Fir Peace Farm Community Garden

Fir Peace Farm is a cooperative community garden hosted by Steve Bernheim and Susan Bauer at 137 Byrle Hall Road, Orcas Island WA.

A Foodraising Tradition.  At Fir Peace Farm, crop experts, participating neighbors, and the Land Hosts maintain a year-round community garden in a three-acre meadow. Fir Peace Farmers have been planning, planting, pruning, and picking vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs without pesticides and with as little fossil fuel and commercial energy as possible, since 2021.

Year Round Participation. Ten to fifteen families participate each year, working Thursdays or Saturdays, about 12-15 hours per month in the high seasons. We have a volunteer Site Manager who sets weekly tasks and guides annual planning; others supply all our starts and seedlings or cultivate the crops and gather, weigh, track, and share out the weekly harvest for the participants’ take-home baskets.

Sustainability.  Fir Peace Farm aligns with San Juan County’s Food System Plan to scale up local food production and increase home production and processing of local food.

Help make the County more independent of outside food supplies when you volunteer your suitable fallow site or your time and energy at Fir Peace Farm or another cooperative community garden in your neighborhood. Orcas Cooperative Foodraising Network, a 501(c)(3) organization, helps start and sustain cooperative community gardens free of charge.
